Lernet-Holenia, Alexander eigentlich A. Marie Norbert Lernet


Lernet-Holenia, Alexander (real name: Alexander Marie Norbert Lernet), b. Vienna, Oct. 21, 1897, d. Vienna, July 3, 1976, narrative writer, dramatist, essayist, poet who adhered to strict formal principles; originally officer, traditional Austrian of the old school, cosmopolitan with French esprit, gentleman, sportsman, man of the world, traveller. Lived in Vienna and St. Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut lake district. His prose is bound up with the "Habsburg myth"; uses the Imperial cavalry as a symbol for the lost Habsburg empire; its officers are loyal even after its tragic end; (as illustrated in the novel "Die Standarte", 1934). 1969-1972 President of the Austrian P. E. N. Club. Kleist Prize 1926, Grand Austrian State Prize 1961, Austrian Decoration for Science and Art 1967.
