First performance On that day the following Beethoven works were performed at the Theater an der Wien, under Beethovens direction: the 5th, the 6th (Pastoral), the 4th piano concerto, op.58, the choral fantasy op.84, as well as several parts of the Mass in C major, op.86. The 5th and 6th were at that time numbered in reverse order. Not only that the concert was too long - nowadays the programme would make up two and a half concert evenings - the theatre was not heated and attendance was scarce. Choir and orchestra were not homogeneous and had not been able to rehearse properly; some soloists, e.g. Mrs Anna Milder, withdrew their participation at short notice so that substitutes had to be found. Beethoven had an argument with the orchestra and the musicians asked him to stay away from the rehearsals. The piano soloist should have been Ferdinand Ries, a pupil of Beethovens, but he laid down the part because he had only been given the score five days before the performance - that is why Beethoven himself had to be the soloist.
