Zipper, HerbertZipper, Herbert, b. Vienna, April 27, 1904, d. Santa Monica, USA. April 21, 1997, composer, conductor, music educator. After a sucessful career as a musician in Vienna deported to the Dachau concentration camp in 1938 because of his Jewish descent. At Dachau, Zipper composed the "Dachau-Lied" to a text by J. Soyfer; was released from the concentration camp after paying ransom, went to the Philippines, where he was interned by the Japanese; lived in the USA after 1945, where he exercised considerable influence on music education.
