Wulfen, Franz Xaver Freiherr von© Copyright Baron Franz Xaver von Wulfen, lithograph Wulfen, Baron Franz Xaver von, b. Belgrade (Yugoslavia), Nov. 5, 1728, d. Klagenfurt (Carinthia), March 16, 1805, priest, botanist, mineralogist. Carried out research on the mineralogy and flora of the Alps. Moved to Klagenfurt in 1773; went on numerous expeditions. Some of the numerous plants discovered and classified by W. have been named after him (e.g. Wulfenia carinthiaca); the yellow lead ore "Wulfenite" also bears his name. Publications: Abhandlung vom Kä. Bleispate, 1785; Plantae rariores descriptae, 1803; Cryptogama aquatica, 1803; Flora Norica phanerogama, 1858.
