Ybbs an der Donau, Jan. 14, 1945, one of the most outstanding Austrian mathematicians. Studied above all the theory on algebraic functions; became a teaching and research assistant at the University of Technology in Vienna in 1892, where he succeeded in solving the problem posed by general theta functions in 1895 (awarded the Prize of the Academy of Göttingen); 1895 Professor at the University of Innsbruck, at the University of Vienna from 1903-1935.
