Spalato, Croatia (then Split), April 18, 1819, d. Vienna, May 21, 1895, composer of operettas. From 1835 lived in Vienna; student of S. Sechter and I. von Seyfried; from 1840 musical director at the Theater in der Josefstadt, from 1845 at the Theater an der Wien. 1865-1882 musical director at the Carltheater. His operetta "Das Pensionat" (1860) is considered the 1st "Viennese" operetta and was produced as a response to the Offenbach operettas staged at the Carltheater. Works: 31 operettas: Der Bandit, 1848; 10 Mädchen und kein Mann, 1862; Flotte Bursche, 1863; Pique Dame, 1864; Die schöne Galathee, 1865; Leichte Kavallerie, 1866; Banditenstreiche, 1867; Fatinitza, 1876; Boccaccio, 1879. - Overture: Dichter und Bauer, 1846. - Mass in C major, requiem, symphony, string quartets, choral works, incidental music.
