Slatin, Rudolf Karl© Copyright Rudolf Karl Slatin, photo around 1914 Slatin, Rudolf Karl, b. Ober-St.-Veit near Vienna, June 7, 1857, d. Vienna, Oct. 4, 1932, explorer, Anglo-Egyptian general, known as S. Pasha; 1878 called to Egypt by Gordon Pasha (military governor of Darfur province in Sudan), during his years of service travelled the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan and acquired in-depth knowledge of that area. After heavy fights taken prisoner by the Mahdists 1883 and only succeeded in escaping 1895 at considerable risk to his life. 1900-1914 British inspector general in Sudan.
