One of the most successful opera composers in Vienna between 1900 and 1920. In 1908 founded the Philharmonic Choir in Vienna, which he directed until 1920; 1912-1920 taught at the Vienna Musikhochschule*, 1920-1933 director of Musikhochschule in Berlin; teacher of E. Krenek.
