Odoaker (also known as Odoacer and Odovacar), b. around 430, d. Ravenna (Italy), March 15, 493, (murdered); son of the Sciri prince Ediko at the court of Attila; around 470 officer in the life-guards of the Roman emperor, 476 led a revolt of mercenaries and deposed the Western Roman emperor Romulus Augustulus and was proclaimed Germanic king on Aug. 13, 476 in Italy. 488 withdrew the Roman administration and the army from the province of Noricum ripense after a war against the Rugi, thus ending the Roman era in Austria. Defeated by the Gothic king Theodoric, he took refuge in Ravenna, which was then besieged for 3 years; after its fall O. was slain during a banquet.
