Archivist of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, from 1897 taught at the Vienna Conservatory. Published the entire works of F. Schubert, J. Haydn and J. Brahms. M. was also a composer (inter alia orthodox masses); from 1879 friends with Brahms and his secretary. 1897 Honorary doctorate of the University of Leipzig. Literature: ÖBL; NDB.
