Hohenwart, Karl, Graf von GerlachsteinHohenwart, Karl, Count of Gerlachstein, b. Vienna, Feb. 12, 1824, d. Vienna, April 26, 1899, politician. 1868-1871 governor of Upper Austria, 1871 Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, major exponent of federalism, his solution for the national conflicts failed and he was dismissed. 1879-1891 leader of the "united right-wing" of the Reichsrat, in 1891 founded the "H.-Klub", made up of Bohemian landowners, German clerics, Slovenes, Croats and Ruthenians. 1885-1899 president of the supreme audit office.
