Fried, Alfred Hermann© Copyright Alfred Hermann Fried. Photo. Fried, Alfred Hermann, b. Vienna, Nov. 11, 1864, d. Vienna, May 4, 1921, pacifist, journalist; Nobel Peace Prize Laureate 1911. At first assistant in a bookshop in Berlin. Together with B. von Suttner he published the magazine "Die Waffen nieder" (renamed "Die Friedens-Warte" in 1899) from 1892-1899. Founded the German Peace Society (Deutsche Friedensgesellschaft) in 1892, devoted himself to the cause of international understanding and participated actively in the Esperanto movement. During World War I he lived and worked in Switzerland.
