Ehrenfest, PaulEhrenfest, Paul, b. Vienna, Jan. 18, 1880, d. Leyden (Netherlands), Sept. 25, 1933, physicist, professor of theoretical physics in Leyden from 1912, belonged to A. Einstein's circle of friends. Research on Einstein's theory of gravitation, Planck's quantum theory and capillarity theory; E.'s hypothesis on "adiabatic invariants" made him a forerunner of atomic physics. Publications: Einsteins theorie van het stationaire gravitatieveld, 1913; Welke rol speelt de drietalligheid der afmetingen van de ruimte in de hoofdwetten der physica, 1917.
