Znojmo, Czech Republic (then Grusbach near Znaim), Feb. 8, 1921. Art historian, professor and head of department in Vienna from 1909. Main representative of the "Vienna School" of art history. D. was a leader in his field in taking the greater intellectual/historical context of works of art as the basis for his observations; also made essential contributions to the organisation of historical monument preservation in Austria (Curator General from 1905).
